The Super Energy Conversion Efficiency from Firefly

圖片
From the end of April to the middle of May in Taiwan, you can see many fireflies, and enjoy the beauty of natural light.  When you come to visit fireflies,  You can let the firefly land on your hands.  You will not feel any heat from the firefly. That is why people always say firefly has Cold Light.  But, you will not let SSL (Solid State Lighting) land on your hands, because SSL is too hot to be touched by the fingers.  Firefly has a very high  Energy Conversion Efficiency, ~98% 👍, which means only 2% of energy becomes the heat.  Human technology keeps improving  the Energy Conversion Efficiency of SSL  from Incandescent Light Bulb, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) to Light Emitting Diodes (LED).  Scientists have discovered the mechanism of how fireflies can illuminate. The light results from the oxidation of an organic substrate, a Luciferin, catalyzed by an enzyme called a Luciferase.  Scientists are doing nano bioengineering, a...
